“My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla. But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly. Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.” – Goodreads
The book starts off introducing Maddy, a smart and witty 17-year-old that wants to see the world with everything in her. She wants to explore, meet people and see, well… everything! But, due to a rare illness she isn’t allowed out of her safe, air-locked house.
Her mother is a doctor and she has a nanny/nurse. She takes classes online and life is pretty much boring, until one day when Olly moves in next door. At first they use hand gestures to talk to each other through their upstairs windows, then begin IM’ing and emailing. Soon things escalates, and this is where you need to read to find out more!
I really loved this book. It was sweet, fun and had me nearly in tears at some point. The characters felt real enough and you really root for them! They were both tragic in a way and therefore perfectly suited. There were also these illustrations throughout the book that fit perfectly and were well thought out. Not too much and with enough detail.
As a debut novel I can certainly say: Well done! I will definitely be reading more books by Nicola Yoon. This isn’t a book that will blow you away, but you will also not be making a mistake in reading it. I am also pretty sure this is going to be one great movie! Can’t wait!
