Life leaves you scarred. Love can make you beautiful.”
Seventeen year-old Sloane Munster is trying to reboot her life after a serious car accident left her badly scarred and emotionally traumatized.
Starting her senior year at a new school, she’s delighted to see Luke Naughton, a swimmer whom she once crushed on, in the class in front of her. But when he glares back at her with disgust and revulsion, she’s shocked and hurt, and assumes it’s because of her appearance. Despite misunderstandings, the chemistry between them sparks and love grows against a background of guilt, secrets, and mounting tensions at a school where bullying is rife and Sloane is not the most deeply scarred person.

My Thoughts:

This book starts off with Sloane starting life at a new school. You can tell something bad happened to her, but the details are only revealed a bit later in the book. You do know she has a scar on her face and that everyone is staring at her, some even pity her. Everyone except Luke. Luke looks at her with hate in his eyes and it is really unsettling. But life is life and soon they are forced to work together on a school project and neither of them are particularly happy about this. This is where things start getting interesting. I won’t tell you more, the rest you need to read for yourself!

I can tell you though, that Scarred is a book that not only tugs at your heartstrings but also discusses quite a few interesting themes: loss, bullying, young-love, depression and guilt. The themes are woven into the story seamlessly and definitely kept the pages turning. There are also some great characters: the ones you love to hate, the one you wish was your best friend, the one you feel sorry for, and even the one you wish you could slap!

If you enjoy YA/Contemporary, I suggest you read this book. It hit all the right notes! It has a great pace with enough happening to keep you interested, but not so much that you feel overwhelmed.

I didn’t think I would love this book as much as I did, nor did I think I would read it so quickly. It was truly a great book with great writing, that made me feels things. And that is all I ask of a good book: make me feel!

Favorite Quote:

“Luke doesn’t see the scar on my face; perhaps he never did. He saw the scars on the inside. We were equally damaged, me and him.”

This got a 9/10 from me.
