Every Heart a Doorway

Every Heart a Doorway

“Children have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere… else.
But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children.
Nancy tumbled once, but now she’s back. The things she’s experienced… they change a person. The children under Miss West’s care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world.
But Nancy’s arrival marks a change at the Home. There’s a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it’s up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of the matter.
No matter the cost.”

The characters are so amazing! Nancy is dark and still, Sumi is crazy and fast, Jack and Jill are freaky, Kade is fabulous and Christopher is the friend you always wanted. They are all thrown together in a school where being different is normal and talking about ‘other worlds’ during therapy is the order of the day. They take classes like normal kids, but have fears and longings that ‘normal’ doesn’t start to cover.

I couldn’t really find anything wrong with this book, except that it could have gone on for much longer. It felt too short, but still made me want to pick the next one up right away! So the pacing was fast, but perhaps a little too fast at times for me. However, the story was as enchanting as Alice in Wonderland and it even makes you look at this classic in a different way. You also start to wonder what your ‘other’ world would be like and how you would adapt.

I think the cover is very apt and gives a deeper meaning to this book, as well as the title. Very well chosen! A story that is beautiful on the inside and out. I can’t wait to see what happens next. The possibilities are endless!
